![]() ![]() The ICSSR also participates in the activities of the international social science organizations like International Federation of Social Science Organisations (Quezon City, Philippines), International Social Science Council (Paris, France), Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (Canberra, Australia), Science Council of Asia (Tokyo, Japan) etc. The Council has international collaboration agreements with 11 countries in the form of exchange of scholars and collaborative and joint research projects/seminars/conferences/ publications. It provides regular maintenance and development grants to all its research institutes on matching basis to study local issues from multi-disciplinary perspective. ![]() During the last forty-eight years of its establishment, the ICSSR has been actively promoting and funding social science research in the country. The ICSSR s objectives as spelt out in its Memorandum of Association are the following: Review progress of Social Science Research and advise the Government on policy issues Fund and promote Social Science Research in Universities/Colleges/ Research Institutes Provide Ph.D., Post Doctoral, Senior & National Fellowships to researchers & faculties Grant Minor, Major & Collaborative Research Projects to faculties and researchers Support seminars and conferences to disseminate social science research findings Sponsor training and capacity building programmes for young researchers and faculties 1Ĩ Indian Council of Social Science Research Encourage international collaboration in research with foreign countries and funding agencies Indicate periodic themes in neglected and new critical areas of research Provide library, documentation, data and online services for social science research and Support publication of journals and books & strengthen professional social science associations/organizations. ![]() The ICSSR is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development and a premier research organisation with six Regional Centres, 24 Research Institutes and five Recognised Research Institutes located in different parts of India. This led to the establishment of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) in 1969 to promote and fund social science research in the country. As the country s development process threw up numerous and diverse problems that required extensive research and analysis, Government of India established a Committee for Social Science Research under the Chairmanship of Professor V.K.R.V Rao in 1965 to survey the social science research scenario in the country and make recommendations to accelerate the progress. The real breakthrough came only after Independence when higher education system expanded at a rapid rate as a part of the programme of planned socioeconomic development. Social science teaching and research, however, made a formal beginning with the introduction of modern university system in the second half of the 19th century when University of Mumbai (1857), University of Madras (1857), University of Calcutta (1857), Allahabad University (1875) etc. India has a long and rich tradition of social sciences teaching and research.takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramashila, Valabhi and Pushpagiri Universities, to name a few, flourished as global centres of learning in different parts of India. Thus, social science research renders vital services to the society and the country.
